What happened to Windsurf

Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent, acquired Windsurf in July 2025. Today windsurf.com redirects to devin.ai, and Devin's pricing page sells the editor as Devin Desktop, with access to Devin's cloud agents from the Pro plan up.

Usage works as an allowance that refreshes automatically on a daily and weekly basis. Devin does not publish the size of each plan's allowance; if you exceed it, extra usage is charged at API pricing, and the cost of each message depends on the model and the size of the task.

Which plan should you pick?

  • Free: to try the editor; Tab completions and inline edits are unlimited, agent use is light.
  • Pro ($20): the plan for regular use. Full model choice, cloud agents and higher quotas.
  • Max ($200): only if you keep running out of Pro's allowance.
  • Teams ($80 + $40 per seat): for shared billing, admin analytics and priority support; a team of five full developers pays $280 a month.

Comparing it with Cursor?

Cursor changed its plans in October 2026 and is now part of The X Subscription with Grok. Its cheapest plan that runs Claude or GPT is $30 a month plus usage.

Windsurf pricing FAQ

Is Windsurf still available?
Yes, under a new name. Windsurf was acquired by Cognition, the maker of the Devin agent, in July 2025. windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai, and the editor is sold as Devin Desktop on Devin's plans.
Is Windsurf (Devin) free?
There is a free plan: a light agent quota with limited models, plus unlimited inline edits and Tab completions. Full model access, cloud agents and higher quotas start with Pro at $20 a month.
How much does Windsurf cost now?
Free ($0), Pro ($20/month), Max ($200/month), Teams ($80/month for the team plan plus $40/month per full developer seat, up to 200 users) and custom Enterprise pricing, as listed on devin.ai/pricing.
What happens when I run out of quota?
Each paid plan has a usage allowance that refreshes automatically on a daily and weekly basis. If you go beyond it you can buy extra usage, charged at API pricing. Cost per message depends on the model, the size of the task and the reasoning required.
Windsurf (Devin) or Cursor?
Devin Pro is $20 a month and includes frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google within its quota. Cursor now sits inside The X Subscription: Plus at $8 runs only Grok models, and Claude or GPT need Premium at $30 plus usage billed at API list price. If you want Claude or GPT in your editor for a flat monthly price, Devin Pro is the simpler deal; compare both before you decide.
