FAQ
Why fractional shares changed who can invest
A single share of some US companies costs more than a month of rent. Before fractional dealing, that priced ordinary investors out of exactly the companies they most wanted to own, or forced them into whichever cheap stock they could afford whole, which is a terrible way to choose a portfolio.
Buying a fraction removes the constraint entirely. You decide the amount rather than the share count, so £50 buys £50 of a company regardless of its share price. The practical effect is that you can hold ten companies with £500 instead of one, and diversification stops being something only larger accounts can practise.
It also makes regular investing work properly. A fixed monthly amount buys more when prices fall and less when they rise, without any cash sitting idle waiting to reach the price of a whole share.
The catch worth knowing
Fractions are not always transferable. If you move your account to another broker, whole shares transfer cleanly and fractions often have to be sold first, which can trigger a taxable event you did not plan. It is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason not to assume portability.
Voting rights usually do not come with a fraction, and dividends are paid proportionally, so a quarter share pays a quarter dividend. Both are reasonable, neither is always spelled out.
Watch for brokers offering fractional CFDs rather than fractional shares. Capital.com and Plus500 both appear in fractional searches, and neither gives you ownership of anything. Real fractional shares come from eToro, Trading 212, XTB, IBKR, Moomoo and Webull.
The short answer
Trading 212 has the lowest barrier at $1 and Pies that automate the whole thing. eToro is the most flexible across markets. Interactive Brokers is the one to pick if you want fractions of shares listed outside the US too.
If a broker advertises fractional trading and you cannot find the word ownership anywhere, assume it is CFDs and move on.
A fractional share is a slice of a single stock. Instead of paying the full price of one Amazon or Nvidia share, you buy a dollar amount and own a fraction of it.
As low as $1 with Trading 212, or around $10 with eToro. You choose a cash amount rather than a number of shares.
Yes, you receive dividends proportional to the fraction of the share you own.
